Starting Up and Shutting Down OpenLinux 66 Getting Started Guide After the boot process is completed, you see a graphical login window where you can log in and begin using OpenLinux. NOTE: If the graphical login shown does not appear because you had problems configuring your graphics hardware, log in at the system console (character mode) using a username and password and proceed to the section “Starting the Graphical Desktop” on page 67. Logging into OpenLinux Before you can do anything on your Linux system, you must log in using a valid username and password. CAUTION: You may have used systems like Microsoft Win- dows where entering user account information and pass- words is optional. In Linux you must enter a username and password at the Login prompt before you can use the system. To log in to your OpenLinux system: 1. At the Login: prompt enter a username. This should be either the root user, if you’re doing system administration work in Linux, or one of the regular user accounts you created during the installation. Icons appear in the login window for root and for each regular user on your system. 2. Enter the password for the username that you entered. This is the password that you entered for the user account you created dur- ing the installation. For security reasons, the password that you type does not appear on screen. Type it carefully and press Enter (or click on the Go button).
